Outrage and dismay following comments by Iran’s President Mahmud Ahmadinejad

It was a disgrace and a slap in the face for democracy, said Paul Spiegel, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, following the comments made by Iran’s President Mahmud Ahmadinejad at a conference in Tehran. President Ahmadinejad called openly for the destruction of Israel and the Jewish community.

“I believe such incentives to hatred pose a threat to the security of Jewish communities,” declared Paul Spiegel. “We can only fear that Islamist fanatics will now feel encouraged to attack Jewish communities and institutions. By now the world simply must open its eyes to the danger which emanates from Iran. This above all applies to the threat posed by the Iranian nuclear programme and its long-range missiles.”

Calls to commit violence and, indeed, eliminate other states are unacceptable. We ask the international community to condemn this incitement to genocide in unmistakable terms. Every democratic head of state should consider whether he or she wishes in future to sit at the same table as this Iranian President!
