‟Stand up! Never again anti-Semitism!” Rally by the Central Council of Jews at the Brandenburg Gate
With a large rally at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin the Central Council of Jews in Germany wants to take a stand against anti-Semitism. With the motto “Stand up! Never again anti-Semitism!” the Central Council of Jews is calling on everybody in the country to oppose the wave of hate against the Jews.
Chancellor Angela Merkel will speak at the rally to be held at 15.00 h. on Sunday 14th September 2014. “It means a lot to the Jewish Community to be able to welcome the Chancellor to an event that is so important for us, and that together we can take a stand against anti-Semitism”, said the President of the Central Council of Jews, Dr Dieter Graumann.
Further speakers include the President of the German Bishops’ Conference, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, the Chair of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Dr. h.c. Nikolaus Schneider, and the President of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald S. Lauder.
President Graumann explains the reason for the rally:
“In the past weeks we have witnessed how bare anti-Semitism has blazed up. The outrageous and shocking words of hate on Germany’s streets, the attacks on Jewish citizens and synagogues have caused great concern in the Jewish Community. There have also been ugly antisemitic excesses in neighbouring countries. The Jewish Community, however, will not be intimidated but continues to focus on shaping a self-confident Jewish life in Germany. This is the message we want to mediate on 14th September: We are here! And we are staying here! And we will resolutely oppose any hostilities, together with all our friends in German society.
The Central Council hopes for wide support from politicians, the churches and civil society: “Attacks on Jewish people are attacks on us all, on our democratic core values of tolerance and freedom. We must never accept anything like this in Germany and this is why we are sincerely inviting everybody to join us in making a resolute stand against hate and agitation. It is high time for us to rise together: “Stand up! Never again anti-Semitism”.
