Gilad Shalit to be released! – Joy and gratitude in Germany’s Jewish community

"The Central Council and the whole Jewish community of Germany have received with great relief, joy, and gratitude the announcement of the release of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit abducted by Hamas five years ago while doing his military service," said the President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany Dr. Dieter Graumann as a first reaction.

"We hope, together with his parents and friends, that the young man held hostage by terrorists in violation of international law will be released soon and return home to his family. We also pray for Gilad's quick and complete recovery from the trauma of his captivity," said Dr. Graumann.

"The Israeli government's decision to release a large number of terrorists, among whom are murderers responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Israelis and nationals of other countries, in exchange for the freeing of Gilad Shalit is surely not an easy one, but it is deeply humane," said Dr. Graumann. He said that, by taking this decision, Israel was fulfilling its obligation towards the young soldier, in particular the important promise never to forget a single soldier. "We would like to express our special thanks and recognition for Gilad Shalit's impending release to our Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel, the German mediator, and the Egyptian government that played an important part in the negotiations and achieving the positive result," said the President of the Central Council.
