Central Council criticises Israel's recent settlement plans

Berlin – The Central Council of Jews in Germany has criticised Israeli plans to build new Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem. The Council's Vice-President, Dieter Graumann, told the online edition of the daily Handelsblatt that the plans were a "wrong signal at the wrong moment", politically unfortunate and potentially harmful. He called the announcement of the plans, which are controversial within the Israeli coalition government, during the visit to Israel by the US Vice-President Joe Biden a "formidable mistake" that played into the hands of Israel's enemies. "It is indisputable that there is a strong commitment to peace in all of Israel," said Graumann. "Therefore, it is particularly unfortunate that the Israeli government undermines its political credibility by carelessly allowing such mistakes to happen, thus affronting an important ally."
