New Formula One scandal

London/Berlin/New York – In March 2008, the FIA President Max Mosley found himself plunged into a sex scandal caused by a video that showed him in the company of prostitutes dressed in concentration camp clothes. On 4th July of this year, The Times published an interview with the Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone in which he expressed his admiration for dictators, in particular Adolf Hitler. Ronald S. Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress, said in New York that Ecclestone, because of his views, was not suited to run an organisation like Formula One and called on all F1 teams and drivers, as well as the countries hosting the races, to immediately suspend their cooperation with him. Dieter Graumann, Vice-President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, too, called for Ecclestone’s resignation. “The man is either very stupid or incredibly malicious, or probably both,” he told the Handelsblatt newspaper. “No team should work with him any more.” The Prime Minister of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, Günther Oettinger, cancelled a meeting with Ecclestone scheduled for 12th July. Meanwhile, the 78-year-old Briton has apologised for his statements. (07.07.2009)
