Federal states to subsidize Abraham Geiger College

Berlin – At their meeting in Berlin, the prime ministers of the federal states decided to add the Abraham Geiger College in Potsdam to the list of institutions jointly subsidized by the states. In future, this rabbinic college established in 1999 will receive €250,000 p. a. from the states and an additional €50,000 p. a. from the state of Brandenburg. A press release issued by the College states that this decision demonstrates the German government's commitment to strengthening Jewish life and culture. The decision to provide subsidies of €250,000 p. a. to the Abraham Geiger College was taken at the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the States at the beginning of December. However, it was vetoed by the state finance ministers. Now the prime ministers of the states have decided in favour of the College, which is presently attended by eighteen rabbinic and four cantorial students. (26.03.2009)
