Central Council criticises Gerhard Schroeder's visit to Iran

Berlin – The Central Council of Jews in Germany has harshly criticised the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. In an interview to Hanover 's Neue Presse daily, the Council's Secretary General, Stephan J. Kramer, said that Schroeder's plan to meet the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was greatly damaging the reputation of the German government and Germany . He argued that by meeting the Holocaust denier Ahmadinejad, the former SPD leader would support the Iranian regime and enhance Ahmadinejad's prestige thus helping his election campaign. Kramer said that, "in the interest of human rights", it would be better if Schroeder cancelled his visit to Iran . (21.02.2009)
