Secretary General: Commemoration should not be left to neo-Nazis

Berlin/Dresden – The Secretary General of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Stephan J. Kramer, called on Germany's politicians not to leave the commemoration of the victims of the Allied firebombing of Dresden to the neo-Nazis. In an interview to the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, Kramer said that while he was pleased with the "protest by the democrats who took a peaceful stand against the neo-Nazis", he found it regrettable that no "senior conservative or liberal politicians" turned up. He said a greater focus should be put on Dresden's Heidefriedhof cemetery as "a symbolic place for the numerous civilian victims – among them Jews – of the firebombing". According to Kramer, the cemetery could be a nationwide "synonym for the senseless casualties of war". (16.02.2009)
