Foundation stone laid for new synagogue

Mainz – On 23rd November, the President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany , Charlotte Knobloch, the Prime-Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Kurt Beck, the mayor of Mainz , Jens Beutel, and the head of the Jewish Community, Stella Schindler-Siegreich, laid the foundation stone for the new synagogue of the Jewish Community of Mainz. Speaking at the ceremony, Charlotte Knobloch said that the revival of Jewish communities in Germany after the Holocaust was a "small miracle", according to the newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung. "We should be very happy that Jewish life is becoming visible again." The head of the Jewish Community of Mainz, Stella Schindler-Siegreich, said the laying of the foundation stone was a "deeply moving event" that evoked "painful memories of the past but at the same time joy, gratitude, and hope". She related that "the road to the laying of the foundation stone was long and arduous" and expressed her special thanks to the board of trustees of the "A New Synagogue for Mainz " society.

Apart from the synagogue, the new Community Centre will house event rooms, administration offices, and a library. Building work is due to be completed in the first half of 2010.

To help the Jewish Community of Mainz, which has 1,000 members, finance the interior furnishings of the future synagogue, a benefit evening titled "The burnt time" had been organized at the Deutsches Kabarettarchiv Foundation before the laying of the foundation stone, raising € 2,000. (24.11.2008)
