President of Central Council: Potential for far-right violence remains high

Munich – The President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany and of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, Charlotte Knobloch, is concerned about the high potential for far-right violence in Bavaria . She has once again called for a ban on the far-right National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) and other far-right organizations. Knobloch's statements come in response to the report by the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution for the first half of 2008. "It is alarming that there are about 1100 potentially violent far-right extremists in Bavaria," said Knobloch in an interview to the news agency AP. "It is time to put an end to the public activities of these brown gangs," she said. "In addition, it is a farce that election campaign costs are refunded to a far-right extremist party if it receives more than one percent of votes cast. This public money must be spent better, first and foremost to fight far-right extremism." (12.08.2008)
