Jewish cemetery in Cottbus desecrated

Cottbus/Frankfurt ( Oder ) – Unidentified persons pushed over twelve gravestones at the Jewish cemetery. The cost of the damage has been estimated at €5,000. "So far we have no leads on who perpetrated the attack," said the police spokesman Berndt Fleischer to the newspaper Berliner Zeitung . The mayor of Cottbus , Frank Szymanski (SPD), condemned the attack. He said: "An attack on the Jewish Community is an attack on all citizens of Cottbus ." Szymanski promised unbureaucratic help for the repair of the desecrated tombs. The Jewish cemetery has been in use since the beginning of the 20th century. The Jewish Community of Cottbus was re-established in 1998 and now has 350 members. (28.07.2008)
