A new synagogue for the Jewish Community of Herford and Detmold

Herford – The first sod has been turned in eastern Westphalia to mark the beginning of building work on the new Community Centre of the Jewish Community of Herford and Detmold . The construction costs will amount to approximately €1.7 million. One third of this sum will come from the cities of Detmold and Herford , the rest of the money will be contributed in equal parts by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Jewish community itself. In his interview to the newspaper Neue Westfälische, the head of the Jewish Community, Harry Rothe, explained that, with the exception of 40,000 euros, the Community's part of the funding had been mostly donated by local businesses. "We want to create a cultural space not only for us but also for the neighbouring communities of Minden , Paderborn , and Bielefeld ," said Rothe. He detailed that the new synagogue would be built in the centre of Herford on the site of the Community Centre destroyed in 1939. According to Rothe, laser beams will be used to make the vaulted ceiling of the synagogue's prayer hall look like the starry sky over Jerusalem on the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. (30.05.2008)
